" In The Shadow Of God "

By:  G.R. Self

You’ve been outside mowing the lawn and working in the yard for several hours. It is mid-August. The afternoon sun is blazing down on you from a cloudless sky. The temperature is a muggy 93 degrees. Wiping the beads of perspiration from your face, you decide that you need a break. After pouring yourself a tall glass of cold lemonade, you decide to head to the large oak tree in your yard for several minutes and take advantage of the inviting shade it provides. Shortly after sitting down on the soft grass and leaning up against the tree you feel refreshed, restored and ready to get back to work.

Almost all of us can remember a time when we were outside on a hot day and searched for a shaded area where we would be cooler. In reality, the actual temperature in the shade is no cooler than it is out of the shade. The only difference is that when we are in the shade (or in the shadow of another object; i.e. tree, building, umbrella etc.) we are not exposed to the direct rays of the sun. We are shielded and protected from them. As such, it can feel to us like it is 10-15 degrees cooler, even though it really isn’t.

The shady shadows can also be a place of refuge; offering safety and protection. Various animals and insects dwell in the shadows and rely on the cover it provides to hide, shield and protect them from their natural enemies. Occasionally, even man will seek the shadows if there is a need for him to hide or to escape from something.

God offers all of us His divine protection through His son, Jesus Christ. Although we are all sinners and deserve an eternal punishment in hell (no shade there by the way!), when we accept Jesus as our personal savior, we can step into the shade and shadow of God’s amazing grace and forgiveness. In Almighty God, we can seek and have our refuge and be assured of His unwaivering protection.
